Rock China Atlas is a GIS-based digital archive of China's rock music, designed to reveal the geographic distribution, interpersonal collaboration networks, temporal evolution, and genre ecology of the Chinese rock scene through interactive spatial visualization.
The project serves music researchers, cultural geographers, digital humanities scholars, and the general public, transforming discrete band information into perceivable spatial narratives.
Core data is sourced from yaogun.com — the most comprehensive Japanese-language wiki database of Chinese rock bands, maintained by Japanese music researchers over many years.
| Field | Description | Coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Band name | Japanese / Chinese / English / Pinyin | 100% |
| Location | Province / City / District | ~95% |
| Founded year | Year of first activity | ~70% |
| Members | All historical members | ~85% |
| Genre tags | Wikipedia Infobox tags | ~60% |
| Wiki page length | Proxy for notability | 100% |
Scale: 45,000+ bands across all 31 provincial-level regions of mainland China.
|, occupation, and other non-genre fields); cleaned via regex filtering and manual review; 482 Japanese→Chinese genre translations establishedWikipedia page length (weight) serves as a proxy variable for band notability. While editorial bias exists, this metric provides a usable ranking basis across the large sample.
| Tier | Wiki characters | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Nationally known | > 15,000 | ×10 |
| Scene-known | 8,000–15,000 | ×5 |
| Active bands | 4,000–8,000 | ×2 |
| General entries | < 4,000 | ×1 |
An edge exists between two bands if and only if they share at least one member (past or present). This reflects a key characteristic of China's rock scene: musicians frequently move between bands, forming dense collaboration networks.
Using the Graphology library in a Web Worker:
Member relationships are rendered as 3D arcs (Three.js), with arc height proportional to geographic distance. Hovering over a member highlights all their bands with connecting arcs while fading unrelated bands.
A two-tier system: 9 families → 217 sub-genres.
| Family | Representative styles |
|---|---|
| Rock | Alternative, Indie, Post-rock, Garage |
| Punk | Hardcore, Pop punk, Post-punk |
| Metal | Death, Black, Doom, Thrash |
| Folk | Folk rock, Indie folk, Protest |
| Electronic/Industrial | Industrial rock, Synthpop, Electronicore |
| Blues/Jazz | Blues rock, Jazz fusion |
| Hip-hop/Funk/Soul | Funk rock, Rap rock |
| Experimental/Avant-garde | Noise, Progressive, Math rock |
| World/Other | Ethnic fusion, Reggae, Ska |
To avoid arbitrary color schemes common in Western music visualization, this project establishes a semantic color mapping system based on traditional Chinese painting pigments, linking perceived characteristics of musical styles with color psychology.
Design principle: hue as semantics — reds for aggressive styles, greens for organic and natural, blue-purples for contemplative and complex.
19 traditional pigment colors form anchor points. Each of the 9 families maps to one anchor, and 217 sub-genres undergo semantic micro-displacement within their family's hue neighborhood (hue ±8°, saturation ±8%, lightness ±8%), creating a "pointillist" effect — maintaining family-level recognizability while visually distinguishing sub-genres.
| Family | Pigment | Hue | Semantic association |
|---|---|---|---|
| Punk | Cinnabar (朱砂) | h14° | Aggression, rawness |
| Rock | Vermilion (丹色) | h22° | High energy |
| Hip-hop/Funk | Amber (琥珀) | h30° | Groove |
| Electronic | Daylily Yellow (萱草黄) | h40° | Synthetic |
| World | Tender Green (嫩绿) | h62° | World beat |
| Blues/Jazz | Patina (铜绿) | h82° | Warm, organic |
| Folk | Emerald (翠绿) | h168° | Natural, sincere |
| Experimental | Indigo (绀青) | h308° | Rational, complex |
| Metal | Peony Red (牡丹红) | h342° | Heavy, dark |
Do different cities exhibit quantifiable musical style preferences? How can we measure a city's degree of specialization in a given genre?
Borrowing from economic geography, we define a city c's music character index for genre g:
LQ(c, g) = (City c's weighted band count in genre g / City c's total weighted band count)
÷ (National weighted band count in genre g / National total weighted band count)
Notability weighting: Simple counting causes cities with many small bands (e.g., Beijing) to converge toward the national mean across all genres. Tiered notability weighting ensures that prominent bands contribute more to a city's character profile.
Leave-one-out correction: When computing a city's LQ, the city's own data is excluded from the national baseline. This addresses the problem of large cities like Beijing and Shanghai always having LQ ≈ 1 due to their sheer volume, allowing their true style specializations to emerge.
Sub-genre granularity: LQ is computed at the 217 sub-genre level rather than the 9 family level, preserving finer stylistic distinctions.
Character popups display each sub-genre's LQ deviation (e.g., +320%) and can expand to show representative bands with their notability scores.
The project supports Chinese, English, and Japanese across:
